TRAI proposed inter operability in Set Top Boxes for different Platforms
“Rest assured, we will make inter-operable set-top boxes (STBs) happen,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India chief RS Sharma told Times of India, adding the goal was to achieve this within a year. The issue is complex: DTH operators and cable service providers have opposed the move citing piracy concerns and technical difficulties. But the telecom regulator wants “neutral STBs” that do away with proprietary software and allow multiple downloads. This move is expected to revolutionarize the Broadcasting Sector in the way the Telecom Sector ushering in order to increase consumer convenience. Given that DTH Operators are against the move, any Regulation by TRAI to this effect may also face a slew of challenges in the form of Litigation by the Operators.
